Three things to do to make sure your boat passes MN DNR inspection for aquatic invasive species.
In years past you might have gotten off with a warning, but Minnesota Department of Natural Resources officials say this year you could get a ticket for violating state laws and practices that keep aquatic invasive species from spreading. Three things to do before you transport a boat: Citations range from $50 to $1,000. Check out the Patch video above from a DNR demonstration held this month at Long Lake in New Brighton, MN. For more information, see one-minute and 30-minute videos from the MN DNR (click thumbnails).

It's finally here. Patch is your one-stop-shop for everything you need to know about the 2012 Minnesota fishing opener before heading out this weekend. From rules and regulations to live bait outlets, we've got you covered.
Minnesota has seen more than its fair share of cold, wet and windy fishing openers, but it doesn't look like 2012 will be one of them. Forecasts call for clear skies with morning lows in the upper 40s and afternoon highs in the high 70s. The fishing season officially begins at the stroke of midnight, and Minnesota's Department of Natural Resources (DNR) expects anglers to find a good bite throughout the state. Read the metro area fishing outlook here. Minnesota is the nation’s leader in fishing participation (28 percent of residents age 16 or older buy a license). About 500,000 anglers typically hit the water on opening day, and about 1.4 million people buy Minnesota fishing licenses each year. Minnesota's general fishing opener is the …
Odds are there is good fishing not far from your front door.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has put together a compact guide to the opener to help you find what you need to know. With more than 250 lakes in the metro area managed for fisheries and nearly 300 miles of good-sized streams and rivers, anglers would be hard-pressed to find another major urban area with such a wealth of fishing opportunities. Take the Mississippi River, for instance. Flowing through the heart of the metro, its northern reaches are well known as a top-notch bass fishery. Then there’s "Pool 2," the area between the dams at St. Paul and Hastings. A few decades ago, it was so…

Forecasted gusty winds and low humidity over the weekend have officials on alert and urging residents to be cautious when grilling or enjoying campfires.
Gusty winds and extremely dry conditions have prompted the Minnesota DNR to elevate fire danger classifications for much of Minnesota. Apple Valley and Dakota County remain in a 'very high' rating. But about half the state has been placed in the 'extreme' category. No burning permits are being issued in Apple Valley and Dakota County at the current time and other burning restrictions have not yet been implemented. Wednesday's scheduled controlled burn near Flint Hills created a towering plume of smoke that could be seen for miles, however the Minnesota DNR was monitoring that fire closely and winds were calm. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will place burning restrictions over much of the state starting March 26, with more areas included later, due to the melting of snow and winds drying the dead standing grass and brush in open areas. Spring fire restrictions limit open burning until summer green-up occurs. Traditionally, most wildfires in Minnesota occur during April and May. More than 95 percent of these fires are caused by human error. “Because of the high fire incidence during this time period, the DNR proactively initiates burning restrictions,” said DNR Fire Prevention Coordinator Larry Himanga. The restrictions normally last from four to six weeks until sufficient green vegetative growth occurs. Spring fire …
