Eastview Boys Kick To Their First State Class 2A Soccer Crown

Senior Jacob Opheim scored two goals, including the game-winner in the second half, and Eastview dropped Blaine 3-2 Thursday for its first state soccer championship

Led by two goals from senior midfielder Jacob Opheim and standout play both offensively and on defense, Eastview won its first state boys soccer championship Thursday with a 3-2 win over Blaine in the Metrodome. Third-seeded Eastview led 1-0 and 2-1, but both times Blaine came back to tie the score. Finally a goal by Opheim—his second of the night—with a little over 16 minutes to play, proved too much for the Bengals to overcome. Eastview Wins State Championship

The Lightning boys soccer team defeated Blaine, 3-2, in the Class 2A state championship match this evening at the Metrodome.

The Eastview boys soccer team defeated Blaine, 3-2, in the Class 2A state championship match this evening at the Metrodome. In what proved to be a closely fought match, Eastview led 2-1 at halftime. But, Blaine tied the score with about 19 minutes left in the match. Three minutes later, Eastview went ahead for good on Jake Opheim's second goal of the match. Pierce Erickson had the assist on the game-winning goal. Scoring for the Lightning in the first half were Michael Stockton, off a Sam Fluegge corner kick three minutes into the game; and Opheim, off a header from a Fluegge free kick in the 21st …

Eastview Beats Stillwater 3-1, Advances to Class 2A Boys Soccer Finals

The Lightning beat the Ponies 3-1 in the 2A Boys Soccer semifinal.

MONDAY—The Eastview boys soccer team has punched its ticket to its second consecutive Class 2A state championship game. The Lightning earned a spot in Thursday’s title game by defeating Stillwater, 3-1, in the semifinals Monday evening at the Metrodome in Minneapolis. Eastview, 14-2-4 overall, will meet Blaine in the championship game. Blaine scored its second upset of the state tournament Monday afternoon when it defeating Champlin Park. The Lightning stormed out to a 2-0 lead in the first half. Jake Opheim netted his team’s first goal with 14 minutes left in the half on a throw-in by Sam Fluegge. The Lightning defeated Moorhead, 2-0, in the quarterfinals of the Class 2A state soccer tournament Thursday evening.

The Lightning scored two first-half goals en route to a 2-0 shutout over Moorhead in the Class 2A state quarterfinals Thursday evening at St. Cloud State University. Eastview, 13-2-4 overall and the tournament’s third seed, will play the winner of Thursday night’s other quarterfinal match in St. Cloud—No. 2 Stillwater vs. Owatonna—at 6 p.m. Monday at the Metrodome. Eastview got on the scoreboard with about 27 minutes remaining in the first half when Michael Stockton netted a goal on a throw-in by Sam Fluegge. White Bear Lake scored with about three minutes left in regulation to defeat the Lightning, 1-0, in the Class 2A state quarterfinals Wednesday night at Hopkins High School. White Bear Lake was the tournament’s fourth seed, while Eastview was the fifth seed. The loss ends what could be described as a successful season for Eastview, which finished with a 13-4-1 record and the Section 3AA championship. The girls will play White Bear Lake Area on Wednesday in Hopkins, while the boys will play Moorhead on Thursday in St. Cloud.

GIRLS TOURNAMENT The Eastview girls (13-3-1), the tournament’s fifth seed, will play number-four White Bear Lake Area (16-1-2) at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Hopkins High School. Eastview last played on Oct. 16, when it defeated Park (Cottage Grove) in a shootout for the Section 3AA championship. First-round matches planned for 7 p.m. Tuesday include ninth-seeded Apple Valley at number-eight Bloomington Kennedy, 12th-seeded Park at number-five Lakeville South, number-10 Holy Angels at seventh-seeded Simley and 11th-seeded Bloomington Jefferson at number-six Rosemount.
