Local students will compete for more than 8,300 merit scholarships totaling more than $34 million.
Eleven of the 15 District 196 seniors named semifinalists in the 2012-13 National Merit Scholarship Program last fall have been selected finalists and are eligible to compete for the more than 8,300 merit scholarships totaling more than $34 million which will be awarded this spring. The finalists, according to a District 196 news release, are Mitchell Dawson of Apple Valley High School; Justin Dietz, Madison Janvrin, Paulina Marell, Eleanor Schriner, Sylesh Volla, Kevin Wei and Aliya Zhdanov of Eagan High School; Audrey Gunn and Lauren Schaffran of Eastview High School, and Paul Wollersheim of Rosemount High School. Apple Valley High School student Maren Loe is one of about 2,500 high school seniors nationwide to win a National Merit-sponsored college scholarship from the prestigious National Merit Scholarship program, according to a news release from the organization. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation this week released the names of the National Merit scholarship winners, its second group of winners in the annual scholarship program. Loe, who listed her probable career field as biomedical engineering, also scored a 36 on the ACT college entrance test and is one of the school's valedictorians. Eastview High School student Mariel Supina is one of about 1,000 high school seniors nationwide to win a corporate-sponsored college scholarship from the prestigious National Merit Scholarship program, according to a news release from the organization. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation this weekreleased the names of the corporate scholarship winners, its first group of winners in the annual scholarship program. The 11 students at Apple Valley and Eastview high schools who were named 2011-12 National Merit semifinalists in the fall all have been named finalists in the competitive scholarship program, according to a district press release. Maren Loe is the finalist from Apple Valley High School. Finalists from Eastview High School are Reid Anderson, Mikyla Carpenter, Lamisa Chowdhury, Nicholas Havlicek, Jane Kagan, Zane Larwood, Nitin Prasad, Andrew Solfest, Mariel Supina and Samantha Zarate.
