Memorial Day is a day to honor and remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice—their lives—in military service to the United States. Local ceremonies on Monday give people places to gather to do just that: The Apple Valley American Legion Post 1776 will host an observance starting at 11 a.m. Monday, in Veteran's Park behind the post's building. Includes units from the Apple Valley American Legion, Sons of the American Legion, Legion Auxiliary, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Civil Air Patrol as well as music by the Scott Highlands Middle School band. Both Apple Valley and Rosemount had 84 percent of registered voters cast a ballot in the 2012 election.
Apple Valley and Rosemount had a high voter turnout in the 2012 election for a state that is itself already well above the national average. Minnesota fell to third in the country—behind only Mississippi and Wisconsin, according to data the U.S. Census Bureau made public Wednesday evening. Although it had the highest levels in the country of voter turnout in the 2008 election, the 73.2 percent of citizens who voted here in 2012 is still comfortably above the national average of 61.8. (The Census Bureau’s rates are different from those from the Minnesota Secretary of State’s Office, which lists a 76.11 percent voter turnout rate. Last year, more than 80 homes participated in the city-sanctioned garage sale, which runs from May 16-18.
Attention all bargain shoppers! The city of Rosemount will once again coordinate an annual citywide garage sale starting on Thursday, May 16 and running through May 18. Last year, more than 80 homes participated in the event, and this year 62 homes plan to host sales. The garage sale signs signs won't be hard to spot and many neighborhoods turn the event into a festive atmosphere. Garage sale listings and maps will be available from the Rosemount City Hall or Rosemount Parks and Recreation Office. A citywide clean-up day will be held on Saturday, May 18, 2013 from 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon at the Dakota County Technical College at 1300 145th Street East (Co. Road 42). This year the event will take place in the east parking lot instead of the west parking lot as it had been in the past. Landon Medvec gave it his all on Monday in front of celebrity judges Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, Shakira and Usher during the blind audition round on "The Voice".
Rosemount singer Landon Medvec hoped his raspy voice could win over the judges on NBC's "The Voice" Monday night, but his rendition of "You Give Me Something" by James Morrison didn't catch on during the blind audition round. Medvec's performance seemed to surprise celebrity judges Blake Shelton, Shakira and Usher—who thought Medvec was a woman, based on his singing alone. "If I would've hit my button, I would've thought I was picking a girl," Shelton told Medvec after the performance, when the judges' got their first look at the contestant. "I've never gotten that before," a bemused Medvec said before telling judges his audition on the Voice was his first performance. Rep. Anna Wills is listed as the chief author of a proposal to appropriate $25 million to rebuild the Cty. Rd. 42 and Hwy. 52 interchange.
District 57B Rep. Anna Wills (R) wants to appropriate $25 million in bond proceeds for the reconstruction of the intersection of Hwy. 52 and Cty. Rd. 42 in eastern Rosemount. Wills is listed as the chief author of the proposal, which was introduced on March 7 and referred to the House Transportation Finance Committee. The appropriation would cover the cost of environmental studies, engineering, purchase of nearby real estate and construction.
