Students had a chance to rub elbows with roughly 80 professionals in science, technology, engineering and math-related careers at Eagan High School on Tuesday.
Eagan High School junior Rachel Schornak came to the school's STEM Career Fair on Tuesday night with pressing questions about biomedical engineering, her chosen career path. She left with a clearer view of the industry and her future educational path, courtesy of the roughly 80 science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) professionals gathered at the event—the first of its kind at the high school. "They gave you tips on what college path to go on, they explained more of what they do, and more insight into what the industry has," said Schnorak, a high school gymnast. Eleven of the 15 District 196 seniors named semifinalists in the 2012-13 National Merit Scholarship Program last fall have been selected finalists and are eligible to compete for the more than 8,300 merit scholarships totaling more than $34 million which will be awarded this spring. School District 196 is offereing a handful of off-the-beaten-path cooking classes in February, including a home brewing course and a class on mushroom cultivation. Middle and high school students will attend school for 171 days; elementary students will be in school 169 days.
The District 196 School Board has approved the calendars for its 2013-14 school year. The calendar is similar to the current school year, with 171 days of school for middle school and high school students, and 169 days for elementary students. The two-day difference is to allow time for summer literacy assessments in late August for all elementary students, which the district conducted for the first time this year and will continue going forward. On Thursday, Haugen joined School District 196 Director of Elementary Education Julie Olson and other school officials to advocate for a bill that would provide state funding for the implementation of voluntary, full-day kindergarten in schools across Minnesota. At its Dec. 10 regular meeting, the School Board approved a final property tax levy for 2012 (payable 2013) that is 2.7 percent less than the current year. At $73.8 million, the payable 2013 levy is $2 million less than the payable 2012 levy of $75.8 million. For payable 2011 taxes, the district levy was $78.4 million, and for 2010, it was $79.4 million. The Minnesota Department of Education calculates the maximum amount each school district may levy in several categories that support specific programs or expenditures. The cause of the fatal crash involving a schoolbus and a passenger vehicle is still under investigation.
Update (Nov. 19, 3 p.m.) The Inver Grove Heights police department has released the names of everyone involved in Friday's fatal accident near the intersection of Highway 55 and Argenta Trail in Inver Grove Heights. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
