An early morning drug task force raid on a Burnsville home uncovered 12 pounds, or roughly $400,000, of methamphetamine—the largest meth bust in Dakota County history, according to Dakota County Sheriff Dave Bellows. In the latest edition of the Dakota County Sheriff's Newsletter, Bellows lauded Dakota County Drug Task Force officials for the find. The raid took place at 1:10 a.m. last Wednesday morning, according to a criminal complaint filed by the Dakota County Attorney's Office. One man, 35-year-old Albert Morris Johnson, faces two first-degree counts of possession of a controlled substance, each of which carries a maximum penalty of up to 30 years in prison and $1 million in fines. A Dakota County SWAT team helped Hastings police arrest an Apple Valley man that police believed was high on methamphetamine and in possession of a handgun. The officers arrived at an apartment in Hastings and took the suspect's girlfriend into custody, but police learned the man had escaped out a back window. Officers allegedly found a handgun, drugs and ammunition during a search of the apartment. A short while later, the suspect was found walking barefoot in the cold outside near the residence and was arrested. Sheriff's officials described the scene as a case of "snow bumper cars."
The Monday storm that dropped several inches of snow and brought high winds to Dakota County had another unfortunate side-effect, according to the Dakota County Sheriff's Office. Because of poor conditions, nine cars collided in a case of "snow bumper cars" on Dodd Road south of County Road 70, sheriff's office officials said. The crash resulted in minor injuries to several drivers. All drivers were traveling at relatively low speeds, sheriff's deputies said. Patrol Notes Sergeant Scott Durdall observed a man grabbing a small box from behind an electrical boxand running across General Sieben Drive and into awaiting car. A Good Day for a Plunge Last Saturday proved to be a good day for the South Metro Polar Plunge. As in past years, the event was well-attended, with over 1,000 plungers raising a record $250,000 for the Special Olympics. As usual the DCSO was well represented with a large contingent of staff willing to jump. As in past years, Deputy Jen Lenarz was the “ring leader,” organizing much of the event. A Tragedy Averted Deputies responded to a car that went off the road in the area of Blackbird and Ravenna Trail. The driver was the lone occupant of the vehicle, which was very fortunate. The car slidinto a fence, resulting in a support post coming through the windshield on the passenger’s side of the car. As the photo shows, had there been a passenger in the car they would have been seriously injured and possibly killed. Deputy Brian Smidt responded to the call.
