A Rosemount man was sentenced to 60 days in jail in connection with a 2009 fatal hit-and-run in Apple Valley. Eric James Hunter, 44, struck Joan LeVasseur, 26, of Apple Valley, with his car on March 6, 2009. She died a week later. Hunter was also sentenced to three years probation and will be ordered to pay restitution to the victim’s family, according to a news release from the office of Dakota County Attorney James Backstrom. Hunter was tried on two counts: leaving the scene of a fatal accident and driving with a suspended license. He originally was tried two years ago, but the the jury was unable to reach a verdict. The Apple Valley man charged with manslaughter after he allegedly pointed a loaded handgun that he thought was empty at his friend’s head and pulled the trigger waived his right to a speedy trial in a Dakota County courtroom Monday morning. The attorney for Derrick Wallace Dahl, 22, instead made a motion for a contested omnibus hearing on March 23, which was granted by District Court Judge Tim Wermager. Dahl was charged with manslaughter in July after he and friends allegedly were "playing around" with empty guns and he pointed a loaded .45-caliber semi-automatic handgun—which he told police he thought was empty—at his friend’s head while at a home in Burnsville. A Rosemount man will be retried this fall on charges of leaving the scene of an accident in which he’s accused of hitting and killing a deaf woman in Apple Valley two years ago. Eric James Hunter, 42, is charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident and driving with a suspended license in connection with the death of Joan LeVasseur, 26, in March 2009. His new trial is set to begin Oct. 3. Hunter originally was tried on the charges last October. That trial ended when the jury was unable to reach a verdict and Dakota County Judge David Knutson declared a mistrial.
