Area Janitors, Security Officers Taking Strike Authorization Vote Saturday

The two groups, represented by SEIU Local 26, will decide whether to give their bargaining committees the power to call a strike, if necessary, in the lagging contract talks.

Hundreds of Twin Cities-area union janitors and security officers are slated Saturday morning to vote on whether to give their bargaining committees the right to call strikes in the stalled labor negotiations.  Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 26 said it has been bargaining for months for new contracts for its more than 6,000 members who are janitors and security officers, and that the groups have been working since Dec. 31 without new contracts. The union said both of the labor bargaining committees have recommended a "yes" vote for a strike authorizstion.  The union workers, who will take their strike authorization vote at 11 a.m. at the Minneapolis Convention Center, are "facing the threat of reduced hours and …

Subzero Temperatures Headed This Way

Wind chills could reach dangerous lows on Sunday and Monday nights.

There's cold, and there's Minneapolis cold. The Twin Cities area is about to get the kind of freeze-your-face-off Arctic temperatures that give Midwesterners their reputation for hardiness. The temperature is expected to start dropping Saturday afternoon; Monday could be the first day in four years with a high temperature of less than zero. Sunday and Monday nights could see lows of about 8 below zero, and with west-northwest winds of up to 11 mph, well, let's just say "freeze-your-face-off" might not be an exaggeration. The combination of wind and cold could equal a wind chill of about 27 below zero, and at that temperature, according to the National Weather Service, exposed skin is subject to frostbite in less than 30 minutes. By the …

The probability picks up again on Saturday with a 40 percent chance of snow again. On Sunday, the weather service is also calling for a slight chance of snow. High temperatures throughout the weekend are expected to be in the low- to mid-30s, according to NWS forecasters. Twin Cities Politicians Say Romney Won First Presidential Debate

Looking energetic and sounding "presidential," Mitt Romney turned back President Barack Obama in the first of three debates between the two men vying for the top office in the country. Our panel of local politicos weighed in late last night.

Former Gov. Mitt Romney looked less like a "frontrunner" and more like a man on the attack Wednesday night, emerging as the winner of the first presidential debate, according to participants in the area's "Red Twin Cities" and "Blue Twin Cities" surveys, conducted by Patches around the Minneapolis and St. Paul suburbs and exurbs. The "flash" style polls were conducted just hours after the debate from Denver came to close.  Obama "missed his opporunity," according to one Democractic member of our panels. Another called him "rusty" in his first debate since winning two of the three presidential debates back in 2008.  Demcocrats were defensive of the president, not surprisingly. However, more than half of our pollsters said Mitt Romney won …

Celebrate the Holiday, Twin Cities-Style

Special events abound across the region leading up to Dec. 25 and after.

It isn’t just about shopping and family get-togethers. The holidays are also full of special events—some of which have become traditions in their own right—for Twin Cities area residents. Here are some of the local favorites that you can still catch this year: The Target Holidazzle Parade is in its 20th year and has become a Minneapolis institution. Sponsored by the downtown council, the Holidazzle was originally created to encourage downtown shopping. This upcoming weekend is Holidazzle's last of the season; the 2011 parade runs Thursdays through Sundays, concluding this Sunday. The parade runs down Nicollet Mall from 12th to 4th Street and begins at 6:30 p.m. 2011 marks the 49th year kids and their families have been treated to a …

Snow in Rosemount, Dakota County Brings Hazardous Driving

Up to four inches of snow could fall on Rosemount and the rest of Dakota County tonight. This afternoon's accumulation led to what the Minnesota Department of Transportation called "difficult driving conditions."

As predicted by the National Weather Service, snow arrived in Rosemount this afternoon. And with the snow came hazardous roads. Late this afternoon, the Minnesota Department of Transportation—on its www.511mn.org website—was reporting "difficult driving conditions" through the Twin Cities metropolitan area. Interstates 35, 35W and 35E through Dakota County, as well as Cedar Avenue through Apple Valley, were hazardous because of the accumulating snow. The weather services says snow—heavy at times—will continue in Rosemount through today and into the early morning hours of Sunday. Up to four inches is possible overnight, on top of the snow received this afternoon. Rosemount and the rest of the southern metro is under a winter weather …
