Matthew Thomas Bernsten was one of two men charged for allegedly setting fire to and burning down a shed on the University of Minnesota's UMore Park property in Rosemount.
Two men, including one from Apple Valley, have been charged with arson, burglary and property damage after police say they allegedly lit hay bales on fire in a shed on the UMore Park property in Rosemount, and the shed burned down after firefighters couldn't put out the blaze. Matthew Thomas Bernsten, 21, of Apple Valley, and Joseph Michael Sanem, 22, of Rosemount, each are charged with second-degree arson, second-degree burglary and first-degree criminal damage to property, all felonies. Dakota County Sheriff's Department worked with the Rosemount Police Department to catch suspects who allegedly set fire to a shed on the UMore Park property Jan. 5.
The Dakota County Sheriff's Department arrested two males that were allegedly involved in the fire that destroyed a shed on the University of Minnesota's UMore Park property. Dakota County Sgt. Jim Gabriel was traveling through the UMore property in the early hours of Thursday, Jan. 5 when he noticed a suspicious car with four people inside. Gabriel stopped the car and asked the group what they were doing. The group told him they were "out exploring." Gabriel continued to quiz the group, but their story never changed. Gabriel advised the group "to explore new areas" and they left, according to the Dakota County Sheriff Dave Bellow's weekly newsletter. The Rosemount Fire Department was busy tending to a fire early this morning, and requested help from nearby fire stations.
An early morning fire that took place Thursday on the University of Minnesota's UMore Park property is currently being investigated by Dakota County Sheriff's Department. A call came in around 2 a.m. Thursday with information on a pole barn burning off of Lone Rock Trail. "The pole barn was used primarily for storage of hay bales and a few older pieces of machinery. The hay inside caused the fire to burn long and hot for several hours," Rosemount fire chief Scott Aker told the Rosemount Town Pages. "Rosemount Fire was first at the scene, but the rural location necessitated the assistance of Farmington, Hastings and Randolph’s fire departments," Aker told the Farmington Independent.
