Democrats say the divisive amendments and the state shutdown may have contributed to heavy Republican losses.
After just two years at the helm of the Minnesota Legislature, Republicans lost control of both the House and Senate on Tuesday night—a defeat at least some Democrats are attributing in part to the marriage and Voter ID amendments. Going into Election Day, Republicans controlled the House 72-61 and the Senate 37-30. While votes in some districts were still being counted early Wednesday, Republicans conceded that they lost both majorities in the early morning hours, according to Twin Cities media reports. The DFL needed to pick up just four seats in the Senate and six seats in the House. "[Voters] spoke, and they spoke loudly. It was clear they wanted to see a different direction," ousted Eagan Sen. Ted Daley (R) said in an interview with…

(Candidates can withdraw until 5 p.m. Thursday.) So who's officially running for office to represent Apple Valley and Rosemount at the State Capitol? Both cities, along with a small portion of Lakeville and the town of Coates, are located in Senate District 57 after state redistricting was done earlier this year. Pat Hall is the District 57 Republicans' endorsement for state Senate, while Anna Wills received the endorsement for House District 57B this past Saturday. Tara Mack was already endorsed for House District 57A.
The Senate District 57 Republicans held a second endorsing convention Saturday to name two more candidates to run for election this year. Pat Hall is the District 57 Republicans' endorsement for state Senate, while Anna Wills received the endorsement for House District 57B—which covers all of Rosemount and part of Apple Valley—this past Saturday, according to an email from District 57 Secretary Kevin Ecker. Both are Apple Valley residents. Incumbent Tara Mack of Apple Valley already had received the endorsement for House District 57A, which covers part of Apple Valley and a small portion of Lakeville. If the bill passes the Senate on Friday, the question of whether a photo ID should be required to vote will go on the November ballot.
The Minnesota Senate will be voting today on whether photo IDs should be required at the polls on Election Day. If the bill passes, the question will go on November's ballot as a proposed constitutional amendment to be decided by Minnesota voters. The state House passed its version of the bill after a nine-hour debate Tuesday that spilled into Wednesday morning. Because the issue is being handled as a proposed constitutional amendment, Gov. Mark Dayton would not get a chance to approve or veto the bill. Both of Senate District 57's House members—Republican Reps. Kurt Bills and Tara Mack—voted in favor of the proposal. The final 72-62 vote in the House was, in fact, purely along party lines. Republican supporters have argued that the bill …

Bills, a Republican who currently is state House representative for Rosemount and part of Apple Valley, plans to run for Democrat Amy Klobuchar's Senate seat this fall.
Kurt Bills is running for U.S. Senate. The first-term Representative from District 37B made that announcement Thursday morning in downtown Rosemount, where his political career began less than four years ago. “This is where I wanted to be to make this announcement, right in the center of this city and right where this all started,” he said. “There are many things around here around this area that I've been a part of.” About three dozen people gathered for Bills' announcement, including area residents, Republican party officials and reporters from a number of Twin Cities media outlets. “Voters from Rosemount sent me 300 yards down that road to the city council, and we paid down debt,” Bills said, pointing down 145th Street. “And voters from…

"Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result." Isn't that what the republicans just did in Mitt's campaign? I'm suprised we didn't hear about Karl Rove recovering in the hopspital from a heart attack because they were so sure of themselves.   more ›
