UPDATE, 9:29 p.m. Saturday: Friday's dusting of snow was just a preview. The National Weather Service has upgraded its Dakota County winter storm watch to a winter storm warning, starting late tonight and going through midnight Monday. Accumulations of 6 to 9 inches are expected. The situation will grow more complicated Sunday afternoon, as northwest winds of 25 miles per hour, and gusts up to 35 miles per hour, make for low visibility Meanwhile, temperatures should fall to near zero, with wind chills below zero. The National Weather Service forecasts that as many as six inches of snow could fall this weekend.
Winter is coming. Apple Valley, Rosemount and most of the Twin Cities could see nearly half a foot of snow by Sunday night. As a result, the National Weather Service in Chanhassen has issued a winter storm watch, in effect from Saturday evening to Sunday afternoon. Weather service forecasters say as many as six inches of snow could fall on Saturday and Sunday. Windy conditions may lead to blowing and drifting snow and "near-blizzard" conditions in open areas, according to the NWS. Forecasters are also calling for one to three inches of snow accumulation Friday afternoon and evening. Apple Valley and the rest of the Twin Cities metro could see between 6 and 12 inches of snow, as well as freezing rain, from Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday.
The Twin Cities area could receive from 6-12 inches of snow mixed with rain on Tuesday night and Wednesday, which would be the first significant winter storm to hit central Minnesota this season. As of Monday morning, the National Weather Service had issued a winter storm watch for Apple Valley for Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday. A low pressure system that originated in the Rocky Mountains should settle in over much of Minnesota during Tuesday afternoon, and could drop 1-2 inches of snow an hour on Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, according to the NWS.
