Five Things You Should Know Today: August 10

Welcome to fall! Well, welcome to a brief taste of fall weather, anyway. And enjoy it while it lasts.

  1. The National Weather Service is predicting beautiful sunny skies today, with a high near 75 and calm winds for most of the day. Tonight it’ll be mostly clear, with a low around 55. Is this the kind of weather that makes you want to pick apples? Me too.
  2. It’s Military Day at the Dakota County Fair in Farmington. Also today, you can learn all about hostas, water bugs or container herbs, watch cupcake-decorating or rabbit agility demonstrations (but not simultaneously), marvel at a tractor parade and listen to the Brian Gleason Band. 3. And it’s going to be a gorgeous day for in Lakeville. Children ages 6 and up and their parents can spend the day, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., exploring and learning about the plants in Ritter Farm Park. Participants should wear long pants and good hiking shoes and bring water and a lunch. The registration fee is $45.
  4.  The Rosemount City Council has a work session planned from 6:30 to 10 tonight in Rosemount City Hall. On the agenda: more discussion of UMore Park, the budget and the city’s pedestrian and bicycle master plan. Although the public is invited to attend, public comments aren’t solicited during work sessions.
  5. A lot of very important people are celebrating birthdays today: Arthur Guinness, the 4th Earl of Iveagh and a member of the Guinness brewery family; actress Rosanna Arquette; fashion designer Betsey Johnson; boxer Riddick Bowe; and my mom, Patricia Gerboth. Happy birthday, everyone!
