Minnesota Zoo Dolphin Dies at Age 44

The dolphin, named April, was mother and grandmother to other Minnesota Zoo dolphins.

A 44-year-old Minnesota Zoo dolphin died on Tuesday, according to a news release from the zoo.

April, an Atlantic bottlenose dolphin who arrived at the zoo from Chicago's Brookfield Zoo in 2008, had been undergoing treatment for physical ailments over several months, the release said. 

She was mother and grandmother to other zoo dolphins, 22-year-old Allie and 7-month-old Taijah, respectively; she birthed four calves in her lifetime, the release said.

The zoo also has another dolphin, Semo, age 45, which now sets the total number of Minnesota Zoo dolphins at three.

Atlantic bottlenose dolphins are estimated to live longer than 25 years, according to information from the zoo.
