Ceremonies to Honor Fallen Military Members This Memorial Day

Nearby ceremonies on Monday include events in Apple Valley, Eagan and Rosemount.

Memorial Day is a day to honor and remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice—their lives—in military service to the United States. Local ceremonies on Monday give people places to gather to do just that:

11 a.m. Monday, in Veterans Park behind the Apple Valley American Legion Post 1776

Includes units from the Apple Valley , Sons of the American Legion, Legion Auxiliary, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Civil Air Patrol as well as music by the  band.

Before the ceremony, music will be provided by the Royal Brass Quintet. Eagan American Legion Commander, Tom Mullon will host the day's events. It is suggested that folks bring lawn chairs for their comfort. Following the ceremony, there will be refreshments and social gathering in the nearby park shelter.

The observance starts with the Eagan Police & Fire Honor Guard who will present the colors. Participants in the service will include, World War ll veteran Dick Carroll, the Eagan Men's Quartet, Chaplain Debbie Brown and Mayor Mike Maguire, who will deliver opening comments. Special guest speakers will be 1st Lt. Jonathan Reid with the Red Bulls Division and highly-decorated Vietnam veteran, Mark Mulvihill.

Wayne and Gwen Olsen will present a wreath in memory of their son Daniel and all lost heroes. The service concludes with taps by Joe Swierczek and the retiring of colors.

Rosemount

A ceremony will begin around 8:30 a.m. Monday in the Rosemount Police Department parking lot

Includes speakers, prayers, tap and a 21-gun salute, involving the Rosemount American Legion and Rosemount VFW.

From there, the group visits two Rosemount cemeteries, then the small cemetery at Pilot Knob Road and 160th Street West, then to Apple Valley's Lebanon Cemetery. Each cemetery event runs about 15 minutes.
