Rosemount Mayor Races Cars for a Cause

Local politicians, including Mayor Bill Droste, stepped away from the ballot box and into race cars last Friday.

Racing language is often used to describe political contests; one candidate is "gaining on another", another one is "leading the pack", and sometimes they just go "off the track." This past Friday, a little over 20 City Council members and mayors from across the metro area climbed into demo derby cars and got into a real race at Shakopee's for the Race for Hunger Mayor's Cup benefitting 360 Communities.

Passions were high, trash talk was abundant and the races were completely authentic. Even though only one mayor walked away with first place, everyone took pride in the real winners of the race.  Event organizer Denny Barlau created the race as a charity event to benefit local food shelves.

"We sometimes forget that there is hunger right here around us," Barlau said.
