UPDATED: Car Crash Victim Loved Dancing, Bowling, Family Says

James Sundboom, 66, was one of seven people injured on April 6 in a three-car crash at the intersection of McAndrews Road and Garden View Drive in Apple Valley. He died on Monday from complications stemming from the accident.

An Apple Valley man who died Monday from injuries he sustained in a three-car collision on April 6 loved dancing, bowling and water parks, according to his sister, Kathy Clough.

James Sundboom, 66, was one of seven people injured in a three-car collision at the intersection of McAndrews Road and Garden View Drive in Apple Valley. Although he didn't appear to have severely injured immediately following the crash, Sundboom suffered significant internal bleeding caused by a lacerated spleen and had to be put on life support, Clough said.

On Monday, doctors removed him from a ventilation unit.

Police say the driver of the 2003 Dodge Caravan carrying Sundboom and others ran a red light while traveling southbound on Garden View Drive. The van was  struck on the driver's side by a 2004 Jeep Liberty traveling westbound on McAndrews. The impact pushed the vehicles into a third car waiting in a turn lane at the intersection.

All six occupants of the van were injured, as well as the driver of the Jeep Liberty, according to Apple Valley police. The female driver of the Caravan—an employee of the group home—was airlifted from the scene, according to Apple Valley Police Captain Michael Marben. The accident occurred just after 2:30 p.m.

Sundboom was seated directly behind the driver in the Caravan, according to Marben.

The accident is still under active investigation, and police are currently waiting for an accident reconstruction report from the Minnesota State Patrol, Marben said. Once the report is complete, authorities will likely review the case for potential criminal charges, Marben added.

Sundboom, who also had Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, worked for 28 years at a car wash in Richfield, Clough said. The job was a "natural fit" for him, and he developed a reputation as a meticulous cleaner, Clough said.

"People wouldn't come unless he was working," said Clough, laughing at the memory.
