Firefighter to Retire After 35 Years of Serving Apple Valley

Involvement with the Apple Valley Fire Department has been a family affair for Assistant Chief Dan Engel, who plans to retire on Wednesday.

After starting his firefighting career in Apple Valley when he was 18 years old, Daniel James Engel will retire after nearly 35 years with the .

Engel, who is now assistant chief of operations and equipment, plans to retire on Wednesday, the department announced.

But his experience with the department goes even beyond his 34 years and six months of service. Involvement with the department has been a lifelong affair for Engel, as well as his family.

Engel and his twin brother, Joel, grew up around the Apple Valley fire station because their dad, Lawrence "Larry" Engel also was a firefighter with the department, from 1967 until 1980, according to a press release.

The brothers joined the fire department as volunteers in 1977, when they were 18, and both have been serving the community ever since.

Engel's son, David Engel, also was an Apple Valley firefighter, and his wife, Barb Engel, previously served on the Fire Department Auxiliary, according to the release.

Over the years, Engel progressed from firefighter to captain to district chief to assistant chief.

He also has been involved in many of the department's volunteer efforts, including public education and fire prevention week activities at local elementary schools.

He also was involved in the Firefighters Relief Association, and as co-chairperson and .

"Dan and his family have been key players in the success of the Apple Valley Fire Department," the release said.

A reception honoring “Chief 4,” as he's known among colleagues, is planned for after his last day of work.
