Sen. Clausen Fields Questions on Education, Alcohol from High School Students

Sen. Jim Carlson and Sen. Greg Clausen visited an Eagan High School government class earlier this week.

Eagan High School government students had the chance to ask DFL senators Greg Clausen, Apple Valley, and Jim Carlson, Eagan, questions on a range of policy topics when the legislators visited an Advanced Placement class earlier this week.

The senators fielded questions on truck weights, education funding, graduation testing and Sunday alcohol sales.

“I enjoy speaking with high school students as they transition from high school to college and are rapidly developing their political identity,” Carlson said in a statement. “Many have been active in their communities regarding issues important to them, and as many turn 18 their vote also becomes part of the process.”

Students inspected copies of actual bills passed through the Health and Human Services and E-12 Education committees and examined researcher reports on the bills.

“I think people underestimate the impact they can have on the political process,” Clausen said. “Your involvement doesn’t have to begin and end in the voting booth. If you contact your elected official with your legislative concerns in an honest, non-combative way, there is a good chance you can help shape their opinion on certain topics. I hope these students are encouraged to do just that in the future.”
