A Presidential Award for Science Teaching Goes to Cathy Kindem in District 196

Kindem previously worked at Cedar Park Elementary STEM School in Apple Valley as a science specialist before her current position as a coordinator of innovative educational programs.

One of 102 teachers nationwide receiving a Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching is right in the Rosemount-Apple Valley-Eagan School District.

Cathy Kindem, the district's current coordinator of innovative educational programs, will receive the award for her science teaching, the district recently announced. Up to two teachers in a state can receive the award annually: one math teacher and one science.

According to the district: "Kindem was selected as one of two state finalists in science in 2012. The state finalists were judged by a panel of distinguished scientists, mathematicians and educators, and Kindem was selected Minnesota's recipient for science teaching."

Kindem's experience includes six years at Diamond Path Elementary School of International studies and five years as science specialist at Cedar Park Elementary STEM School. She began her current position in August 2013.

"The Presidential Award is an honor and a blessing," Kindem said in a news release from District 196. "My passion for science has developed since I was a young child, and it is a privilege to now influence others to wonder, discover and explore the world around them. I am thankful for wonderful colleagues who share a desire to foster positive attitudes toward science in all students. My goal is to continue to support, design and advocate for exemplary science programs. This award is a treasure I will always keep in my heart."

Award recipients receive $10,000 from the National Science Foundation and will travel to Washington D.C. for an awards ceremony and other activities.
