Rosemount Students Excel in Academics, Sports

A number of students at Rosemount elementary, middle and high schools were honored this spring for their achievements.

Rosemount students from elementary to high school distinguished themselves this spring in sports, academics and other activities.

Here is a roundup of honors and awards earned by Rosemount students.

Fifteen Rosemount High School students were named 2010-11 students of the year by the District 196 School Board: Zachary Tubbs, art; Michael Huffstutler, business; Sarah King, English; Brynn Pavlica, family and consumer science; Shelby Cooper, languages of the world; Brooke Stevens, mathematics; Savannah Ricard, dance; Michael Brossart, instrumental music; Chad Berg, vocal music; Andrew Nelson, physical education; Tony Prostrollo, science; Kalley Burckhard, social studies; Michael Arends, special services; Travis Matz, industrial technical; and Jul Mosley, work experience.

Two Destination ImagiNation (DI) teams from Rosemount Middle School and two from Shannon Park Elementary School placed high in the state DI tournament in April and qualified for the global finals in Knoxville, Tenn. , in May.

The D I Know Youz team from Rosemount Middle School earned an outstanding classification in the “Project Outreach: Dynamic Networks” challenge, and Rosemount Middle School’s Magic M + Ms team earned an excellent classification in the “Project Outreach” category and the chance to apply for a spot in the global finals.

The two Shannon Park teams that competed at state were the Magenta Exploding Muffins and the Lemon Lime Llamas, both in the “Triple Take Road Show” challenge.

Rosemount High School received American College Testing’s (ACT) Red Quill Award for 2010, based on the efforts of its staff to help students succeed in college. The high school staff was praised for its work on aligning core courses with ACT college readiness standards, for categorizing courses using ACT’s “Wheel of Work” and for offering an ACT preparation course.

Jamie Korpela, a sophomore at Rosemount High School, won a $2,500 scholarship from the West St. Paul Optimists Club in the Optimists Club oratorical competition for students with hearing loss.

Utkarsh Koshti, an eighth-grader at Rosemount Middle School, placed second in the state MathCounts individual competition in March and earned a spot on the Minnesota team that competed in Washington, D.C., in May.

Andrew Hausmann, a Rosemount High School senior, was one of only four students in Minnesota to win a 2011 Academics, Arts and Athletics Award from the Minnesota State High School League. The award recognizes seniors who participate in athletic and fine arts programs and exhibit exemplary citizenship and the highest standards of sportsmanship and conduct.

Michelle Quan, a student at Shannon Park Elementary School, was one of 10 District 196 students selected to display their inventions at the What If? Young Inventors Fair in April. The event features the top 100 student inventions from throughout the metropolitan area.

Five students from Rosemount High School and four from Rosemount Middle School were named to the 2010-11 Honor Bands, sponsored by the Minnesota Band Directors Association.

The Rosemount High School students selected for the Grades 9-10 Honor Band were Madison Holtze, Joshua Hugo, Brittany Majeski, Kaitlyn Mann and Brad Olijnek. Jacob Grunklee, Colleen Helmkes, Nicole Hutchinson and David Jung of Rosemount Middle School were named to the Grades 6-8 Honor Band.

Rosemount High School student Wesley Just qualified for nationals in student congress.

Folashade Pratt was this year’s recipient of Rosemount High School’s Athena Award, given for excellence in individual sports  or for participation and accomplishments in team sports.

Thirteen Rosemount High School students qualified for the international Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) conference in 10 separate events.

The students who qualified were Sara Devitt, first place in the sports and entertainment marketing series; Amelia Volkert, first in principles of hospitality and tourism; Michael Huffstutler, first in advertising campaign; Abby Ceglar and Katelyn Paget, first in video broadcast competition; Danielle Wahl, second in principles of business management; Taryn Bitterly, Nathan Olson and Emily Lemke, second in creative marketing research; Micah Marshal, third in sports and entertainment marketing series; Paige Henke, third in entrepreneurship participating; Maryssa Collins, third in employment interview entry; and Nicollet Sorenson, third in marketing management series.

The Rosemount High School girls’ hockey team qualified for the Class AA state tournament in March. Adam Jackson of Rosemount High School placed second in the 152-pound weight class at the state wrestling tournament in March.

Rosemount High School placed seventh in the Class AA team competition at the boys state swimming and diving meet in March. Jacob Stern placed second in the 100-yard breaststroke, and the team of Stern, Braden McCormack, Luke Dowell and Conor Manning finished second in the 200-yard medley relay.
