Two Teachers in District 196 Recognized as 'Exceptional'
The educators were named TIES Exceptional Teachers for their work in integrating technology into the classroom.
A middle school teacher and high school teacher in the Rosemount-Apple Valley-Eagan School District are among the 2013 recipients of the TIES Exceptional Teacher award.
TIES is a cooperative with members from 48 Minnesota districts. The annual award honors teachers "who effectively integrate technology into the learning process," according to District 196.
Ross Albertson, a teacher at Dakota Hills Middle School, and Apple Valley High School teacher Chris Lee will receive recognition for their awards at the TIES Annual Conference on Dec. 16.
Albertson received a grant from the Lockheed Corporation in 2012 for Chromebooks for students in his science classes this year. Students use the Chromebooks to access Google Docs for analysis and reporting of their lab results, according to the district.
In addition to other activities, Albertson also offers an afternoon learning session every week to assist students in various subjects.
Chris Lee has taught at Apple Valley High School for more than 20 years. He was an early user of cell phone technology at the school to connect and engage with students.
Says the district: "Lee was 'flipping' his classroom before the teaching method became popular, videotaping lectures, demonstrations and study-guide sessions, then uploading them to YouTube for his students to watch as homework."
Both teachers have not only impacted students, but they have also influenced their colleagues to look for ways to integrate technology in their classrooms as well, according to the district.
