Crotty wasn't the only student wowed by the musician's afternoon performance during the performance, which took place during the high school's pep fest event. Hundreds of students packed the gymnasium floor to dance, shoot video with their smartphones and take in Nicholas' laid back vibe.

The soulful singer, who took third place on the last season of NBC's hit musical competition "The Voice", grew up in Eagan and graduated from Eagan High School—where he played football and basketball.

Nicholas David rounded out his 15-minute set by commenting on his admiration for the school and its student body—an admiration that was returned by EHS student Kelsey Doucette, who attended the concert.

"It's very, very entertaining for us to see not only such an amazing person who's gone through so much in his whole life while growing up, but someone that went through our hometown," Doucette said. "To see him stay true to himself is by far the most amazing thing."
