Sports Roundup: Busy Weekend For Eagles, Lightning

Apple Valley, Eastview teams ramp up the schedule as conference races begin to heat up.

It was a busy weekend for both the and athletic programs as the Eagles and Lightning squads competed in a full schedule of events from Thursday through Monday.

Apple Valley Cross-Country

The Apple Valley cross-country teams headed south to run in the Faribault Invitational last Friday, with the girls claiming a meet victory while the boys took eighth.

Led by Abbey Singleton's sixth-place run of 15 minutes, 19.1 seconds over a 4,000-meter course at Alexander Park, Apple Valley nipped Stillwater by two points for the Faribault team title. 

Alexa Nelson (15:41.7) placed 10th, followed by Natalie Webb (15:58.7) in 18th, Meredith Jones (16:03.2) in 20th and Shanni Moorse (16:38.9) in 44th in the team scoring.

The Eagles boys team was led by Alex Brandel, who took 29th in 17:18.8 on the 5,000-meter course. 

Eastview Cross-Country

Both of the Eastview cross-country teams competed in the Bauman/Rovn Invitational at Gale Woods Farm in Minnetrista last Thursday, with the boys taking second and the girls coming in 11th.

Ken Hoffman and Nick Oelke led the Lightning with runs of 16:36.5 and 16:37.7 to finish in eighth and ninth, respectively. 

David Salter (16:43.1) took 11th, Dan Spika (17:01.4) was 17th and Joe Manders (17:52.4) placed 45th to round out the Eastview scoring.

Courtney Conroy topped the Lightning girls with a run of 15:55.9 to take 22nd.

Apple Valley Boys Soccer

The defending state champions fell out of the top-10 rankings after splitting its two games at the NSC Challenge Cup in Blaine.

Bloomington Jefferson, ranked fifth in Class AA, handed the Eagles their second loss of the year, 2-0, in the Cup opener last Thursday, before the squad bounced back to top Mankato East, ranked eighth in Class A, by a 4-3 score on Saturday.

Apple Valley entered this week with a 4-2-1 record and was led by Mitchell Dawson's five goals this autumn.

Eastview Boys Soccer

Two wins to close out last week kept the fifth-ranked Eastview boys soccer team unbeaten this season as the Lightning topped Bloomington Kennedy, 6-2, on Thursday and Northfield, 2-1, on Saturday.

Mathew Gweh's 11 goals and 15 points lead 6-0 Eastview, with the goalkeeping tandem of Treston Kederer and Sam Ruelas logging three shutouts combined with 26 saves on 30 shots so far this fall.

Apple Valley Girls Soccer

A 1-0 win at Bloomington Jefferson last Thursday followed by a 1-0 loss to visiting Hastings on Saturday gave the Apple Valley girls soccer team a 3-4 record heading into this week.

Stephanie Syverson scored the Eagles' goal in the Thursday win, with goalie Lauren Hoeppner making 11 saves. Statistics for Saturday's defeat were not made made available.

Eastview Girls Soccer

A pair of decisive wins kept the sixth-ranked Eastview girls soccer team unblemished at 6-0 as the Lightning closed out last week with an 8-1 defeat of Bloomington Kennedy and a 4-1 besting of Duluth East on Thursday and Saturday, respectively, at home.

Paris Sanders scored three goals against the Eagles and two more against the Greyhounds to take over the Eastview scoring lead with seven goals on the autumn. Teammates Leah Nesheim and Taryn MacMillan have five goals apiece this season.

Apple Valley Girls Tennis

The Apple Valley girls tennis team lost to Lakeville South (4-3) and North (7-0) last week.

Claiming match wins against South were: singles player Danielle Tobroxen and doubles teams Anna Nguyen/Mouy Bun and Kati Erb/Katrina Volgelgesang.

Apple Valley Volleyball

The Apple Valley volleyball team finished last week with a 4-3 record after going 2-2 and taking fourth place in the Aerie Challenge, held on Friday and Saturday.

Individual statistics were not made available. The Eagles beat Renville County West and Virginia in pool play before falling to Caledonia and Stewartville in the playoff round.

Eastview Volleyball

The Eastview volleyball team placed 17th in the Southwest Minnesota Challenge Tournament in Marshall on Friday and Saturday.

Individual statistics were not made available. After opening with a loss to Canby, the Lightning swept their next four matches against Fergus Falls, St. Michael-Albertville, Burnsville and Chaska to bring their record to 5-4 on the season.

Scores and results for the Eastview girls tennis team were not made available.
