Top 10 Apple Valley High School Sports Moments of 2010-11

These are Apple Valley Patch's picks for AVHS athletics highlights from the past school year.

1. Apple Valley's wrestling team's accolades collectively take our top spot for the school's athletics accomplishments. The team was named the No. 1 high school wrestling team in the nation, and also , making them winners of nine of the past 10 state titles (and several wrestlers won individual honors). Coach Jim Jackson , and senior wrestler Matt Kelliher .

2. Speaking of state titles, the Eagles boys soccer team also captured one—its second-straight, to be exact, while maintaining a 47-game winning streak.

3. Apple Valley's co-ed cheerleading team also at the Minnesota Cheerleading Coaches Association state competition.

5. Three Apple Valley High School staff or former staff members were inducted into the Minnesota State High School League Hall of Fame. Honorees were teacher and girls track and field coach Geri Dirth, teacher and boys soccer coach Chuck Scanlon, and former assistant principal for arts and sciences Nancy Grimes.

6. Apple Valley tied for third place in the Minnesota Cup challenge, which measures schools' successes in athletics and fine arts section and state competitions. The Eagles finished third in points accrued, behind Eden Prairie and Wayzata.

7. The Eagles boys and girls track and field 4 x 100 meter relay teams .

8. The AVaires dance team returned to state this past winter, and  in the high-kick division.

9. Senior Tom Obarski was awarded a place on the all-state teams in boys soccer and football—yes, two sports that are played during the same season.

10. AVHS skiers earned accolades in their respective events this past winter. Dane Jensen in alpine ski in the sport. Andy Dodds in nordic ski earned his 2nd consecutive all-state honor.
